Paul Johnson´s visit

We were glad to welcome Paul Johnson as our guest at San Juan Bautista in early December. Paul is assistant to the bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, and a valued partner in ministry here in Comodoro. He worshiped with us, (he is kneeling in the foreground)

Shared in a feast of empanadas (here pictured with Nico and congregation president Malena)

Shared mate with us during our annual congregational meeting (here Solange passes the mate to Lili)

Observed the election of our new church council (Lili, Viviana, Mercedes, Natalia, Malena. Not pictured is our vice president, Brunhilde)

Dear Kari, Your whole description of the Mate experience brought back fond memories of Brazil where there is the same custom! The mate was tamped into a gourd which had been prepared for that purpose. It was tamped down to one side and then the expert in the group would insert the bomba. If one had a gold mouth piece, there was no worry about spreading germs as gold kills germs. Right. Novo Hamburgo, our home town, was the capital of tuberculosis occurence - probably in the world. Then we would pass the mate around. You would drink until the tell-tale slurping sound would signal that one needed more water. The host would add water, and the quia would be passed to the next person.

This was a wonderful friendly custom, but I am afraid it was not as sanitary as it might have been. True, it does not spread HIV, but other diseases might not be as obliging.

It sounds as though you are having a great time. I am looking out our back window into a winter wonderland of snow. It looks just like one of those snow globes. Naomi mentions you often and we are very excited about your wondeful experience. Check out my blog. Naomi got me started over Christmas!
